Great White Egret

This is one of the first paintings in a new series incorporating ideas that Nigel has been mulling over for many years. He has painted birds fading into a very atmospheric and subtle monochromatic background with lots of textural interest achieved by additionally priming the canvas. He says that the eye only focuses on a small area, in this case attracted by the colour of the beak, and then scans the rest of the background which can be diffused. The movement of the bird in flight is captured by a moment in time although the feel of the paintings is timeless and even have a Japanese feel owing to their grace and elegance.
