Jacqui Atkin

Distinctive Ceramic Vases

Jackie is working hard to get new pieces to us before Christmas but each piece is time consuming to make. Her colourful birds are set against a background of foliage in very pleasing designs with lots of textural detail.

Jacqui Atkin creates bold artistic ceramics from her studio in north Shropshire. Here she looks out over the garden to the woodland beyond which she says has the most enduring influence over her work, with its ever changing seasons and rich palette of colour and shape. What makes her work distinctive is the way she interprets this into stylized designs incorporating botanical backgrounds and colourful bird imagery.

The latest technique she has developed uses velvet underglaze colour, applied to the surface in several layers after bisque firing in a painterly way to give depth to the imagery. Finer lines are painted in by hand using a fine liner brush – it takes many hours.

Jackie has been potting for over twenty years, has written many books on the subject and is a professional member of the Craft Potters Association. Her work is exhibited in galleries and held in public collections in the UK.
