Artist Statement

I have always been interested in painting and followed it through to Degree level as a mature student at Lancashire Polytechnic.  Later, I completed a Masters in Fine Art at Northumbria University while teaching in a college.
I work with oils and mixed media based on Landscape. My intention is to capture a sense of place through depicting an atmosphere using seen and abstract spaces. I build up layers or depth and texture using fragments of collage and drawing materials over the top of dried oil paint.  Light and movement is the focus for my paintings. Turner and Pollock have been big inspirations.  I work from memory, drawings and photos to create a personal statement of a moment. The New forest and Dorset coast are just two special places. I love travelling and have kept journals and sketches from around the world often on solo journeys. These provide inspiration as well as the poems that I produce, which often accompany my work.
Creative Coverage have recently published my first book that is successfully selling in local Waterstones as well as on Amazon. The title “Journeys” explores the contrast between both Sea and Landscape and compares different techniques and styles.

Until 2012 I was combining college teaching with exhibiting my work. I have exhibited widely and been a finalist in competitions. Two paintings are hung in the House of Lords permanent collection. I received an Award from The Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries for the Rosemary and Co Award 2011. My paintings have been in exhibitions at the Mall galleries as part of The Society of Marine artists. I was shortlisted three years ago for the Art Gemini prize and been a finalist in the Cork Street Open 2012 and 2013. I won the Hampshire Landscape artist of the year 2016 which was sponsored by Hampshire Life magazine. I have publications in the Artist magazine, Hampshire life and walking magazines. I have had a number of solo and group shows with galleries over the years, and exhibited internationally with a London gallery. I have successfully shown in a solo show at Bath Contemporary, Saffron gallery in East Sussex and a successful two person show at Store Street in Bloomsbury. I have a number of secured solo and group shows planned for the future. I work as a professional artist from my studio in Lyndhurst where I offer six workshops a year.
